Animation Basics: Hogwarts Express (After Effects)
A late 2024 deep dive into the Harry Potter universe inspired the creative direction for this animation. The Hogwarts Express offered a visually rich subject, but the project quickly became a turning point in my technical development.
The initial submission earned a failing grade, revealing a clear gap between the cinematic sequence I envisioned and the After Effects skills I had at the time. Early drafts struggled with masking, track mattes, and background transitions, resulting in motion that felt choppy and disconnected. Attempting to animate silhouettes inside the train windows exposed additional weaknesses in rigging, timing, and motion consistency. Combined with burnout, the revision process felt heavy and discouraging.
Progress began when I stepped back and studied how experienced animators approached similar problems. YouTube tutorials became essential for understanding layer hierarchy, compositing, and transition logic. The editing process started to resemble tracing, overlaying professional techniques to understand how they worked. This method revealed how much of After Effects’ underlying logic was still unfamiliar, but it also accelerated my learning.
Rebuilding the background transition multiple times strengthened my understanding of motion design, asset layering, and scene continuity. The final animation reflects that growth: a cohesive sequence shaped through persistence, external learning, and a willingness to push through technical and emotional roadblocks. This project strengthened my skills in After Effects fundamentals, problem solving, self directed learning, and resilience under pressure.
